2018 PALMERO FAMILY VINYARD PETITE SIRAH

Working with a new vineyard is almost like trying to make a new friend. You know you want to like them and you want them to like you, but it’s not a guarantee that you’ll be on the same page. Thankfully with this vineyard, things felt instantly in tune. This wine is the densest and deepest wine that we’ve made, but it is also richly layered in a way that speaks to the true natural beauty of the site. The wine is densely colored without being inky, and has a beautiful purple tint to it. Aromatically, this wine is jam-packed with the scents of blackberries, black plums, and cherries as well as fresh violets, eucalyptus, and the wet-stone smell of irises. Despite being fermented with 50% whole cluster, the palate has a plushness that could be almost too smooth if it wasn’t bolstered by a strong natural acidity and wave after wave of fruit, spice, and subtle tannins. This wine is living proof that some vineyards are special and are capable of producing wines that reflect that magic.

2018 CALIFORNIA PETITE SIRAH

One of the main elements that often gets forgotten about with Petite Sirah is that it is a grape that is loaded with natural energy. Due to the fact that it is often left on the vine until the sugars reach astronomical levels in order to maximize color and density, the natural acidity and freshness of the grape is generally lost and sloughed off along the way, many weeks before it even gets to the winery. This inaugural vintage of the Mountain Tides Wine Co. California Petite Sirah showcases the freshness and energy that is possible with Petite Sirah when it is handled with care, with conscience, and with a desire to make a wine that is compelling both mentally and spiritually. This wine is not for those who take themselves too seriously. It is fun. It is joyful. And it is meant for everyone. The color of this wine is the first hint that it is not your usual Petite Sirah. It is light and red-colored instead of the typical inky, black wines that most associate with the variety. This wine smells like a fresh fruit punch, jam-packed with red fruit and dusty earth and tastes just as wonderful. There is a moderate amount of tannin due to the amount of whole cluster, but it comes across as more of a savory bitterness than an aggressive astringency. Due to the lower alcohol (13.4%) and the freshness of the acidity, this wine works incredibly well with a variety of foods as well as just a great wine to enjoy on its own. So gather some friends who you hold dear and open a couple bottles because the night is long and the connection is strong.

2018 CONTRA COSTA PETITE SIRAH

Despite being just one variety from one vineyard, this wine is made up of four separate fermentations of Petite Sirah from Contra Costa County. We experimented with varying amounts of whole cluster and a couple different levels of ripeness. This gave us a few tools that we could use to make an extra compelling Contra Costa Petite Sirah. This wine is light and layered and you can tell it is a different breed of Petite Sirah instantly. It is a soft, clear red in the glass and jumps out aromatically with juicy, red fruit, blackberries, and sweet spices like clove and cardamom. This juicy freshness exists in the palate as well and presents itself initially as strawberry candy and raspberry before revealing nuances of dry, dusty earth, cedar, and just a touch of bitterness which holds everything together. There is no pretense to this wine and nothing contrived about it. This is just a delicious bottle that should be shared with friends over and over.

2018 CONTRA COSTA ROSÉ OF PETITE SIRAH

One of my favorite aspects of wine made from grapes grown in Contra Costa County is that due to all of the sand in the soil, the wines tend to have strikingly rich and complex aromatics. Long story short, they smell great! This rosé is no different with gorgeous layers of peach, honeysuckle, and sweet pea flowers. While the Clements Hills rosé showcases the energy and acidity that comes from the clay soil there, this Contra Costa Rosé truly shows how expressive wines grown in sand can be. The aromas are sweet, rich, and enticing while it tastes just as lovely as the nose would suggest. This certainly has acidity and freshness, but it is much more delicately woven into the fabric of the wine. The aromatic complexity, juicy flavor, silky texture, and bright acidity all come together in a beautiful harmony. This wine will pair with food beautifully, but it does not require it. You are just as likely to open a bottle and enjoy it by itself, in all of it’s glory.

2018 CLEMENTS HILLS ROSÉ OF PETITE SIRAH

One of the most beautiful parts of winemaking is that each wine is a truly clean slate. With infinite variables in the grape growing and winemaking processes, no wine that is made honestly and without intense intervention can be the exact same year after year. This year, our Clements Hills Rosé is a vessel of pure energy and freshness. This is not a fruit bomb; instead it gives off aromatic complexity with subtle notes of frozen strawberries, salty sea air, and honeydew. With such an energetic natural acidity, this wine is incredibly refreshing and will really shine when complemented by food.

2018 CARBONIC PETITE SIRAH

Sometimes a mistake can be a stroke of luck, an act of fate, or an act of God depending on where your spiritual inclinations lie. In honest winemaking, the goal is always to make delicious wines that represent the time and place from which they come which I think makes it easier for us to adapt in these situations because we are not trying to force or sculpt the wine into being a predetermined thing. Here we have one such fateful error where the grapes came in much lower in sugar than we were expecting so we experimented with adding over 65% of the clusters in whole without separating the berries from the stems. The resulting wine smells like heaven; a heaven filled with juicy black cherries, sweet spices, and dusty earth. That juicy fruit quality extends to the palate where one would more likely think it is Beaujolais Cru than Petite Sirah. The whole clusters went through carbonic maceration which yields these beautiful fruit flavors, but the addition of the woody stems also gives the wine a strong backbone of tannic structure that is supportive without being overpowering. It is a harmonious and heartfelt wine that we are so pleased to have available, albeit in very limited quantities. At our house, we like to drink it with a little bit of a chill on the bottle so don’t be afraid to throw it in the fridge for an hour or so before opening.

2017 CONTRA COSTA PETITE SIRAH

Grown in the sandy soils of the Sacramento Delta in Contra Costa County, this wine showcases a ruby red color which immediately announces that it will not be your standard dessert-like Petite Sirah. Carrying pretty aromas of blueberry, raspberry, cinnamon and dried rose petals, it feels more elegant than aggressive. More blueberry greets your palate alongside a blood orange bitterness that truly rewards being accompanied by a meal. It is a study in the tension between softness and strength and suggests that maybe there is no difference in the two after all.

2017 CLEMENTS HILLS PETITE SIRAH

Year two of making our Clements Hills Petite Sirah brings us a wine that shares in the richness and depth of the 2016, but with even more freshness and acidity. This purple and magenta colored wine is beautifully aromatic with aromas of dark fruit, dusty earth, spices, and fresh flowers overflowing out the top of the glass. Despite its low alcohol (13.4%), the wine does not feel light on the palate. Similarly to the 2016, there is a richness to the black plum and blueberry fruit that is complemented by a dusty earthiness and sweet spices like vanilla and clove. These rich flavors are hallmarks of this Clements Hills vineyard and are held in perfect harmony by the acidity and moderate tannin that lift everything with a sense of freshness and energy, while making sure this bottling will be delicious for years to come.

2017 CLEMENTS HILLS ROSÉ OF PETITE SIRAH

As the cold days of Winter are slowly winding down, we find that our thoughts are drifting more and more to the delicate renewal of Spring. This time of new beginnings is the perfect chance to release our newest wine, our 2017 Mountain Tides Rosé of Petite Sirah. While Petite Sirah is known for producing an inky, tannic, and heavy wine, this rosé is the color of fresh peaches and holds the delightful aromas of almost-ripe strawberries and cherries, lemons, and orange blossoms. These uplifting scents are matched with beautiful, light flavors reminiscent of tart peaches, lemons, and apple, and just a touch of salinity. These flavors, along with a bright acidity, make this wine incredibly enjoyable and refreshing.

2016 CLEMENTS HILLS PETITE SIRAH

Grown in the red clay soils of Clements Hills, this dark ruby and purple wine calls for social dinners with friends and time well spent with those you love. Aromas of dried cherries and fresh blueberries are uplifted by the scent of white pepper, leather, and clove. On the palate, the fresh fruit greets you first, while the spices unveil after a couple minutes in the glass. Moderate tannins and acidity give this wine a long, pleasing aftertaste that begs for a good meal.
